Caring for a difficult parent in the final chapters of life.

The Roberta Series is a raw, unfiltered look at what it’s really like to care for a parent who’s both vulnerable and volatile. It’s about navigating dementia, denial, and decades of emotional complexity — all while trying to hold onto compassion, boundaries, and your own sense of self.

The journey begins with a letter from my dad, hidden for decades, that revealed the truth about my parents’ relationship: how I watched him try to make up for his past mistakes, and how my mom never let it go. That letter became the lens through which I could finally understand the dynamics that shaped my childhood and the challenges I faced while caring for her in her final years.
Through each episode, I reflect on the stages of our journey: the diagnosis, building a support team, managing day-to-day care, removing the car and cigarettes, placing her in a care facility, and ultimately navigating hospice before her passing in 2021.
Beneath the logistics lies a deeper truth — the balancing act between duty and resentment, compassion and boundaries, love and survival. This isn’t about blame. It’s about understanding, processing, and finding moments of grace in the mess.
For anyone who has cared for a parent who is difficult, manipulative, or complicated — or is preparing for that day — this series is a place to feel seen, supported, and a little less alone.

Months into caring for our difficult mother with dementia, I found a letter my dad wrote in 1965.
A raw, honest series about caring for a difficult parent with dementia.
The line between decline and manipulation can blur - and it did for us.
